I don't reach the question of "the freedom of speech and of the press" until the end of the book -- in Chapter 12 (where it gets paired with intellectual property law). Not because it's not central to Jefferson's views of an ordered society, but because it is -- because it makes a good capstone, I think, to the entire edifice of Jefferson's thinking.
I've attached the portion of Chapter 12 talking about the freedom of speech here. [There's another forum devoted to the IP issues]. Let me know what you think.
